RULES

An interesting artefact, issued at the commencement of the conflict, and laying out the rules of engagement. The only copies traced are in the A. J. B. Walker collection in the Imperial War Museum, the National Army Museum and the University of Cyprus. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. On 26 December 1955 the British Governor General of Cyprus declared a state of emergency, as a result of the EOKA insurgency which had begun with the 1 April Attacks. 4pp, 32mo, printed in black on a bifolium of red card.

2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with unobtrusive spike hole to corner through both leaves. Addressed to 'Sir Thomas Phillipps Bart', and reading: 'Sir, | I am desired by Sir Robert Peel to acknowledge the Receipt of your Letter of the 3d Instant containing suggestions for the Improvement of the Public Revenue. | I am Sir | Your obedient Servant | Edwd Drummond'.

Galley proof or off print of a single column. In fair condition, heavily aged and on brittle high-acidity newspaper stock. Headed: 'Rules for the Game of | Minims | reprinted from | "The Weekly Westminster." | The announcement in The Weekly Westminster Competitions of a prize for a new parlour game, suggested to Mr. Kapp that there was a game to be made out of Minims, a little book published by Faber and Gwyer a few weeks earlier. Mr. Kapp entered the competition and carried off first prize.

3pp., 8vo. In good condition, on two leaves of lightly-aged paper, folded into a packet and docketed (by Harington?) on the outside 'Recd 26 Nov 1890 | Copy | Statement by Mr Campbell on Greenway'. Headed 'In the matter of G. a prisoner'. The document begins with an interpretation of the current arrangements: 'In accordance with the Prison Rules a prisoner under sentence of Penal servitude whilst he continues in the 3rd.

Elaborate pseudo-seventeenth-century design to title-page replicated on front cover. Five-page 'Promoter's Address'' to 'My Friend and Pitcher', signed in type by Sharman, followed by a page listing the five members of the 'Committee, 1874-5' (Julian Sharman; Henry S. Leigh; Bourchier F. Hawksley; Jas. J. Railston; F. W. Robinson), and five pages carrying the club's fourteen rules.

"Rules appliicable to all principal and assistant teachers". 9pp., crown 8vo. On aged and worn paper, with front leaf loose. Shelfmarks, labels and stamp of the Board of Education Reference Library, London. Scarce.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Booklet: 8pp., 32mo. Staples rusting. Cover with Worcester College crest printed in red. Pp.3-6 carry the 20 rules, and p.7 contains a list, in three columns, of 46 'Members of the Society since its foundation.', from F. E. C. Drew to W. T. Lancaster. Menu: on small rectangle of card, headed with 'Menu' and the college crest printed in blue. At the head of the card, in pencil: 'High Table - 18 June 1905'. The menu is written out in another hand, in blue ink: 'Boiled Turbot | Poulet a la Marengo. Kromeskys. | Roast Sirloin of Beef.

8pp., 12mo. Stapled and unbound. In fair condition, on aged paper, with stamps, shelfmark and label of the Board of Education Reference Library. Scarce: no copy in the British Library or on COPAC.

One page. On one side of a piece of watermarked, laid paper, 18 x 11.5 cm, with the reverse blank. On aged paper with slight loss to left-hand margin and slight stain beneath text at foot of page. Laid down on a leaf removed from an album.

On a piece of foxed and discoloured laid paper, dimensions roughly 12 inches by 8 inches. Edges fraying, and with loss to two corners affecting a text and a total of six entries. Cluster of small holes towards one corner, not affecting text. Bearing a circular red stamp, roughly half an inch in diameter, with a central shield surrounded by the words 'FORTE SCUTUM SALUS DUCUM'. Presumably the second of two leaves, with a total of ninety-two ships, numbered 74 to 165, arranged in three columns.

Judge (1830-1913), formulator of the celebrated "Macnaghten rules" of criminal insanity. 3 pp, 12mo. He makes interesting comments on the process of public appointments. "I am sorry to say it is out of my power to comply with your wishes. It is not considered proper in a person holding a judicial office as I happen to do to ask for anything or to put himself in the way of coming under an obligation to any body.
