HARDIE

See Hardie's entry in the Oxford DNB. 11.5 x 9 cm card. Printed with penny stamp in red; no illustration. In fair condition, discoloured and a little worn. Addressed by Hardie to 'C. H. Whitby | 82, Crofton Park | Yeovil.' (Whitby is the author of a handful of books of reglious poetry.) Whitby would appear to be offering for sale, or at least asking for advice about, an impression of Palmer's celebrated engraving 'The Bellman'.

75pp., 12mo. Internally in good condition, on lightly aged paper with 1860 watermark, and some leaves torn out. In worn red leather half-binding, marbled boards, with damage and loss to spine and front free endpaper torn away. The illustrations cover 19pp in the middle of the volume. Those on 15pp are in black ink, with the rest in pencil, one of them coloured. The butt of many of the jokes is music teacher 'Mr [Jack] Hardie'.

'You vanished very suddenly after our Meeting and I did not have the chance of discussing arrangements with you. Will you please let me know what time it passes through Tonbridge on the following Monday.' He hopes to bring two more pictures 'straight to Albany from Charing Cross, arriving about mid-day? If you are not to be there I will take them to the Royal Academy and deliver them in the afternoon.'
