SNOW

An interesting letter, in which Johnson discusses her writing practice. See her entry and that of her husband in the Oxford DNB. The recipient Vere Henry Collins (1872-1966), was an author and grammatical stickler. 2pp, 12mo. 27 lines of text. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight rust spotting from a paperclip. Folded twice for postage. On the topic of ‘Madame de Charlus’, one of the ‘Six Proust Reconstructions’ - plays by Johnson inspired by the work of Marcel Proust - just broadcast on the BBC Third Programme, she thanks him for his ‘most kind & pleasing letter’.

On small square of laid paper. In fair condition, aged and worn, with loss to one corner from opening of the wafer, and tape staining to two edges. Received 19th June 1814 of Messrs. Snow & Co a Box of Jewells [sic] The Property of Lady Elizabeth Palk which was deposited with them about the latter End of June, last year - | Shaftesbury'.

24pp., 8vo. With frontispiece and seven plates. In grey printed wraps. Disbound. In good condition, with light signs of age and wear. The only copy on COPAC at Aberdeen, and now scarce.

1p., landscape 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with strip of discoloration affecting Richardson's signature. The text concerns 'the numbers of the Madras Journal [which] have not yet turned up'. Accompanied by an unattrtibuted newspaper cutting of Richardson's obituary, laid down on a leaf removed from a notebook.

Five items: Snow's two letters and carbons of three of Mercer's replies (5 and 25 March, and 24 June 1964). ONE: Typed Letter from Samson, signed on his behalf, to the Secretary (i.e. G. E. Mercer), Royal Society of Arts, 28 February 1964. 1p., folio. Confirming that he wishes to give a paper on 'The Relative Merits of the use of Steel or Concrete in Structures', 'with a number of slides showing comparisons of various materials'. At the foot of the page is a signed note from Mercer to Sampson, dated 2 March 1964: 'Do we want this?

4pp., 12mo. Disbound bifolium. In fair condition, on aged paper. Subtitles: 'Heads of Scheme' and 'Expalantory Notes'. At end of last page are 'Some Opinions of Public Control' (by 'Mr. Gladstone', 'Mr. Chamberlain' and 'The Times'). Scarce: no copies on COPAC.
