LEGION

Tarleton has become a quasi-mythical figure in the early history of the United States, his actions misrepresented and his character traduced. See his entry in the Oxford DNB, and the magnificent portrait by Sir Joshua Reynolds, in the National Portrait Gallery, London. The present item is 1p, landscape 12mo, on one side of an 18 x 10.5 cm piece of gilt-edged watermarked laid paper. In fair condition, aged, worn and lightly creased, with central horizontal and vertical folds, and evidence of mount on the blank reverse.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. Written large at the foot of a page on a 4to leaf. In good condition, lightly aged and creased, with a short closed tear to the outer edge just below Glubb’s sprawling signature, which consists of an illegible line of curls. Folded once for postage. At the head of the page is Diane Richard’s Typed Note Signed, addressed to ‘General Glubb’ and requesting that he sign ‘two pictures from my collection’. Glubb replies: ‘Dear Miss RICHARD, / I return your two pictures herewith with much pleasure. / All good wishes, / Your sincerely / [signature]’.

Autograph Inscription on glossy page (perhaps from the prelims of a book), 12mo, with image of Wren. head & shoulders, two small closed tears, sl. grubby, good condition. 1p, 4to. In good condition, lightly aged. Endorsed: 'Contingent Account | An Order for Messrs Greenwood Co to pay Lieut Chas Michaelmas [sic] ten Pounds 31st Augst 1814 [sic]'. The Duke signs: 'Adolphus Frederick | Genl: & Col: in Chief'. The rest of the document is in a secretarial hand, and reads: '£10. | Legion Office 31st. Augst. 1813. | Messrs. Greenwood Cox & Co. pay to Lieut Charles Michaelis, late of the 1st. Line Batton.

Each 1p, 4to. Both in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, and each folded three times. On the letterhead she is referred to as 'The Lady Edward Spencer-Churchill O.B.E.' Chairman of the British Legion. Women's Section. ONE: 16 November 1934. Having been informed by 'Miss Gerds' that the recipient 'would like to know if I am coming by Car or by train on December 1st, to open your “Fun Fair,”' she states that she is 'not sure how long it would take to motor from London', but thinks it would be quicker by train. 'I see a good one arrives at 2-47!' TWO: 5 January 1935.

Subervie considers the 'méthod de dessin', which he suggested should be put before the Légion d'honneur, to be 'infiniment superieure au precédés employé jusqu'a present pour l'enseignement du dessin'. A paragraph on 'les jeunes eleves' follows, and Subervie concludes by urging him to continue his trial, 'deja si heureux'. TWO: 'Rapport sur la méthode d'enseignement de M.

Two pages, 8vo, paper bleached by text clear and complete. Many thanks for your two letters. | 1. Thank you for the good advice in the first. Will you kindly tell me whether the Legion film that you saw was that of my book 'The Wages of Virtue'. This was filmed in America with Gloria Swanson as heroine & a star cast, but I have neither seen nor heard anything of it. | 2. I do not think that 'Tigress' was copyrighted in America in any way. The authoress never heard anything about this being done.

Crown 8vo, 7 pp (paginated 2699-2705). Unstitched and unopened sheet, folded twice to make four leaves. Text clear and complete. On aged paper. With red ink tax stamp: 'NEWSPAPER | ONE PENNY | LONDON GAZETTE'. A list of Crimean war officers and men awarded 'the Imperial Order of the Legion of Honour, [...] which His Majesty the Emperor of the French has been pleased to confer upon them'. From the archive of Lieutenant-Colonel George Lynedoch Carmichael (1831-1903) of the 95th (the Derbyshire) Regiment, who was made a Knight of Legion of Honour at this time.

Both items 4to,1 p. Both items good, on lightly aged and foxed paper. Both bifoliums, with the second item addressed, with broken wafer, on verso of second leaf. Both docketed in pencil in a nineteenth-century hand. Letter One (nineteen lines of text): He is grateful to Grenier for sending 'le procès verbal de l'installation de votre Cour'. Grenier was right to think that Jaubert would be interested in 'l'historique d'une cérémonie qui rend aux Cours la dignité convenable à la magistrature, et qui vous touche particulièrement'.

12mo, 1 p. Eighteen lines of text. Good, on aged paper. Address, with broken wafer and two circular postmarks (one in red ink and the other in black) on verso of second leaf of bifolium. Making an order for a periodical publication, and giving instructions for delivery and payment.
