An interesting archive of material relating to a movement whose influence extended beyond the British Empire. In 1906 the MEL had induced the Board of Education to make provision for moral instruction in the education code for England and Wales, and two years later the first in a series of International Moral Education Congresses was held at the University of London, with Michael Sadler in the chair (the sixth and last would take place in Krakow, Poland, in 1934). The twenty items present here are in good condition, lightly aged and worn.

Pp.[viii].424, "NOT PUBLISHED" at base of spine, brown buckram in blind. top and bottom of spine sl. damaged, corners bumped, one corner (front right) bleached and worn, contents good. Inscribed on half-title "Mrs Somerville No.94" presumably the scientific writer, Mary Somerville). One MS. correction on p.264, "passed" to "past", possibly in Somerville's hand but more likely the person who wrote the inscription "Mrs Somerville". Three copies of this edition listed on COPAC.

On one side of a piece of laid paper, 45 x 27 cm. Dimensions of printing, including decorative border, 37 x 21.5 cm. Woodcut at head (between two vignettes) roughly 6 x 7.5 cm, showing two men with packs, one smoking a pipe, trudging across a field, with a dog in the foreground and what looks like a merry-go-round in the background. Clear and entire. With light water staining, but in good condition overall. The poem, attributed at the end to 'Z.' and announced as 'Entered at STATIONERS HALL', consists of seventy-two lines arranged in eighteen four-line stanzas over two columns.

4to (leaf dimensions 30 x 22.5 cm): 4 pp. Bifolium. Text clear and complete. On aged paper with slight wear to extremities and rust staining from paper clips at head and tail. The League's object is given as 'To introduce systematic non-theological Moral Instruction into all schools, and to make the formation of character the chief aim of school life.' The first page contains a brief discussion of 'one or two important matters' relating to the subject. '[...] There is no single moral instruction method. [...] The aim of moral instruction is to form the character of the child.
