7pp., folio. An unbound and unopened half-sheet. Facsimile of Chadwick's signature at end. An interesting document, in twenty-six numbered sections, laying out the duties of the parish officers with regard auditing of the quarterly Poor Rates accounts.

Printed on one side of a 31.5 x 19.5 cm piece of Britannia laid paper. A fragile piece of ephemera, aged and with heavy wear to extremities. The text is complete, except for loss to the first letter ('P') of the first word ('Poor') on the top line. Text reads: 'Poor Rates. | THE GUARDIANS who were appointed a Committee to examine the Receipts of the Collectors, having compared a great number of Receipts with the Original Rate Book, have the satisfaction to inform the Inhabitants that they are fully satisfied with Messrs.

6pp., 12mo. Pamphlet. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper with vertical fold. Headings: Pay [with table giving 'rates of pay [...] applicable to medical officers of the Royal Army Medical Corps']; Issue of Pay and Allowances; Rations, Accommodation, etc.; Allowances in respect of family. Marginal headings: Banking facilities; Disposal of pay; Advance of pay; Issue of allowances; Instructions to agents and paymasters; Joining certificate; Outfit allowance. Scarce: no copy in the Wellcome Library, or on COPAC or OCLC WorldCat.

A newspaper cutting attached to the white paper folder in which these items are placed carries a short obituary of Newton, who died 30 April [1854]. The first letter is 1 page, 4to, addressed on reverse, and the second 1 page, 12mo, with address on reverse of second leaf of bifolium. Both grubby but in good condition. Letter 1: 'I am sorry the very stormy morning will not allow me to join my Brother Magistrates in answering the enclosed Queries.
