He is going to do Lanley 'a great favor' by assisting him 'to become acquainted with my friend Mrs. Bigelow Laurence [widow of Timothy Bigelow Laurence (1826-1869)] - who will be in England during the summer or autumn'. Reminisces about 'a book you and Casserly and I once planned at a breakfast table here', which was 'to consist of the best specimens of the skill and power of the Poets giving one chance to each'. To assist Lanley he is letting him know 'a woman who is a judge of poetry in its best sense.

Fair, on aged paper, with a little foxing to first few leaves, and light damp-staining at head. P.15: 'We are, then, to understand by iatreusis, the exercise, by the physician, of the healing art. [...] The duties devolving upon the physician in treating a case of disease are twofold. First, he has to institute a diagnosis, and having done so, he has, secondly, to practise his share of therapeutics in treating the case according to the view he has taken of it.

Text on one side of a piece of thin card, dimensions roughly 140 x 85 mm. Mourning border on both sides. In good condition: on lightly aged card with a few scuff marks on the reverse. Text reads 'We deeply regret to have to announce that President McKinley, after getting much better up to Sept. 13, then gradually sank from decline of strength and failure of the heart's action, and died.' The source of the text is unclear. Probably intended for display. McKinley was shot in Buffalo, New York, on 5 September 1901, by the anarchist Leon Frank Czolgosz, and died on 14 September.

He regrets that he cannot respond to the appeal that Tessier has made on behalf of the Société des Inventeurs. When he retired from business he thought he would have 'des moments de loisir', but the experience of each day teaches him the contrary, and his time has never been so occupied.

English sculptor (1788-1867)(DNB), responsible for the Nelson on Nelson's Column. Both letters are discoloured by age, but otherwise in good condition. The first letter is 1 page, 16mo, cropped and mounted on a larger piece of paper. 'My Dear Sir Martin | Absence from Town will I hope be a sufficient apology for my not sooner acknowledging the receipt of your card of invitation for Wednesday next - and to state that I shall have great pleasure dining with you that day.' The second letter is 2 pages, 16mo, heavily discoloured and with remains of four wax mounts in corners and elsewhere.
