Two Pages, 4to, bifolium, remnants of tipping in process, good condition. A variant text, differing from the text thrown up by Googlebooks(no doubt itself a variant!). (Original letter appears to be in the BL, Add MSS 31022, f.14- not consulted). It omits Lady Castlereagh's initial sentence (in the version found (on Google) in The Naval Battles of Great Britain (it appears standard): I thank you a thousand times for your interesting letter. Then minor changes.

Our Society is just organising a Superior Girls School in Bombay. We want a throughly ladylike person to be the Head of it, a good Churchwoman & an efficient teacher. It would rank in England as a Superior Middle Class School. | If you happen to know of any suitable person I should be very glad to open up some negotiation with her.

(1788) Letter, bifolium, , cr. 8vo, good condition, one page giving assurances as to quality, etc., with list (essentially a quote) of prices/features of A new Fashionable Chariot with a [?] light coloured cloth, Painted a Green [?] Patent yellow, made of the best materials & season'd timber, followed by a price list of various features (blinds, plated head plates, steps, strong plated harness, packing etc etc). Text: Lady Lyttelton requests Mr. Hogarth to send her a block of white drawing paper like the enclosed [bit?], to be sent as soon as possible to No. 17 St James's Place directed to her. | August 10th || The block to be like the one Captain Percy bought at Mr. Hogarth's.

She encourages her to visit Mr Ellis, giving her a chance to see this part of the Island, and it would be more cheerful here than at the Hotel just now, as the earthquake has scared away the usual amount of visitors. Ellis is around for limited hours (invalid) but they could wine and dine and play with the [cameras?] and you will have the inestimable benefit of my society!!! She has sent off for photographic accessories. There is no dark room here now, so I must change plates at night. I have used those you put in.

Text: I think I shall have it in my power to procure you all the autographs you mention, I have enclosed a note of Sir Willm Allans [not present] & intended to hae sent only the signature but as it relates to his last illness it may be interesting to you on that account. Text: I have today received your letter of the 25th instant forwarding a copy of the Resoluiton passed at a Meeting at Hampstead on Thursday 24th March on the subject of the West African Liquor Traffic. Note: Before the suppression of the transatlantic slave trade European spirits were among the principal commodities exchanged for negro slaves (article In JSTOR).

He hopes for reciprocal visits in Gloucestershire. Ernest is at 17 New Inn Hall St[.] I must say I admired his pluck in going back to Oxford as he did, for it was sorely against the grain. I often hear from him and he is tolerably cheery though he cannot like it. In his postscript he expresses pleasure at meeting his correspondent's mother at Mr. Barry's

Some pencil notes by a later reader, inaccurately attributing to Edmund Law. Were I able to attend I would drink your health Eminent [speaker?] but most exalted when addressing his successor.

Four pages, 16mo, bifolium, some staining, closed tear on joint, but text clear and complete, as follows: I am sorry that I cannot give you the information about Charles Keene that you ask for. I know that he made some drawings on wood for me - for 'yellow backs' but forget what they were, remembering only some were for Bulwer Lytton's novels, nor do I remember the date, but it was when he had a large top room, over an Engineer's shop in the Strand, about opposite Norfolk Street, before he drew for 'Punch'.

Her Majesty was pleased on the 9th instant to appoint me First Lord of the Admiralty and with the other members of the New Board I have entered today upon the duties of the office. | I shall at all times be happy to receive from you any communication on subjects connected with Naval affairs which you may think it for the public advantage to address to me; and you may rely on my most serious attention being given to such representations as your knowledge and experience in the Service may lead you to make.

Signed `Hesing´ in bold black ink at the foot beneath his portrait, also adding the junk's name `Keying´ and the name `Suckling´ [not traced] to the portrait, all with their equivalent Chinese characters beneath. Quite heavily foxed, mainly around not on the image and signatures, top left corner torn off (a red ink stamp might have been there as in other examples, with Chinese characters, being the seal of Prince Hui Rui, but other examples would not have fitted in the lost corner). I have looked through William Starling's papers & I find that not only is he under height (being only 5-71/2) but his Physique was pronounced by the Doctors to be not up to our standard & therefore I am sorry to say that nothing can be done for him.

Page headed Memo, continues: In case of any disputed point requires the decision of the Umpires the Major General commanding will sound the 'cease fire' and the troops will halt until again ordered to advance. When the 'cease fire' followed by the 'assembly' is sounded, the corps will fall in, the Brigades be masses, and the Bands resume their places for the march past.

Business Card, 10 x 6cms, sl. smudged, text clear and bold. Text as above on one side (see image), on the other is printed The Vice President. One website claims the signature is scarce.

Text: We are to have a meeting at Mr. Disraeli's house at 2.30 tomorrow, at which Lord Derby, Cave and Stokes are to be. | Would you write a civil note to Sir Erskine Perry to tell him that some pressing business will keep me from seeing him. Northcote has added a note to the top of the page, Let Mr. Corry [Montagu Corry, Secretary] have a note of the engagement so that Mr.Disraeli may not forget it.

The President of the Board of Control was a British government official in the late 18th and early 19th century responsible for overseeing the British East India Company and generally serving as the chief official in London responsible for Indian affairs.

One page, 12mo, very good condition. He gives permission for 'Road to Tarbet' to be exhibited at Scarborough and Hull, on the understanding that you will take full responsibility for returning it to me in London when the Hull Exhibition ends.

1p., 12mo. Good, on lightly-aged paper, with small scrap from white label adhering to a margin. He explains that the reason that a letter has not been forwarded to him is that he has not, 'for years, had to do with the management of the Illustrated London News', although he does contribute to it. Nevertheless he will try to get the recipient 'a proof of the Port[rai]t. - with great pleasure'. He adds, in a postscript at the head of the page: 'I think the Memoir was cut out from the Times'.
