Six pages, 12mo, good condition. He finds it difficult to give advice because of his being so imperfectly informed as to the present state of the question of immigration into Guiana.

Twelve (12) pages, 12mo (3 x bifoliums), good condition. She starts by saying that perpetual illness and being tired of Bristol first drives her to write to her. From then on she concentrates on Elroy Flecker to a correspondent who must be equally an enthusiast and with whom she shares private information. Yes, I wish I had known in time that you & I could have gone to Hassan [underlined]. I would not have missed it with you. I am half afraid I cannot elucidate the West Gate.

Seven ALSs, one TLS, 18 pages, 12mo, very good condition. [1. 8 July 1960] arranging lunch in a restaurant where they'll be able to talk; [2. 13 July 1960] He thanks her for the valuable & interesting information about Stanley yesterday. Your talk gave me a greater insight into his character than I had before. She amplified what Spencer's writings had revealed, etc.

AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT PRINTING HISTORY TYPOGRAPHY THE TIMES.

See his entry in the Oxford DNB. The present item dates from 1807, the year in which Bathurst sold the celebrated Apsley House ('No. 1 London') to the Duke of Wellington's brother the Marquis Wellesley, who sold it on to the Duke ten years later. It is now the Wellington Museum. This item casts an interesting light on the initial sale. 2pp, 4to. Thirty-four lines of text. In good condition, lightly aged. Folded four times. He is disappointed that the unnamed male recipient (presumably Wellesley's agent) has not called on him.

For information on Graves see the generous obituary of him in The Times, 18 April 1944. Both items in fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with minor staining from paperclip to first leaf of letter. The work was not published, and although Graves states in Item One that the greater part of the text is 'in the hands of my typist', there is no record of its survival, or of the thousand related documents he states were sent to him by M. I was, just then, caught up into a confusion of work. | I telephoned Mr Leventhal (he doesnt live in Woodbury, but in Boston; howeyer, we are in touch) and he was delighted at his good fortune in acquiring a copy of my FARMER'S YEAR.

Two pages, obl.12mo, good condition, small neat hand. Text: Your recent sympathetic reference to Leslie Stuart encourages me once more to be reminiscent - nostalgically. | I claim to know all he wrote - a bold assertion this, considering his output. I wonder how many know that an early song, perhaps his first, and quite different from all others was the comic 'The dandy-coloured coon' [quotes the name sequence from the song] | Sweetheart May - was an early one in my opinion (Vesta Tilley sang this). Then Little Dolly Daydream, Soldiers of the Queen - perhaps about 1895.

Total 4pp., 4to, one with corner torn off, all a little battered but texts clear and complete. Letter One: He asks if anything can be done with [his] book, and discusses his re-writing another straight play. They don't seem to be able to stop me. I roughed it out during the war but have now done a lot to it. I think it's a winner! So does every one else who writes plays [further lighthearted comment on writing plays]. He asks finally whether Macqueen-Pope has any new books coming on. They seem to go down big.

Two pages. fold marks, foxing, text clear, as follows: There exists a desire in many quarters that the pronunciation of Latin in this country should be brought into harmony with that which prevails abroad, and I have reason to believe that many of our best scholars at Cambridge and Oxford and in several of the great public schools favour the project. In the Catholic Church I have always understoiod that the continental pronumciation has been retained; but I have some doubts whether there be perfect consistency abroad in the pronunciation of the consonants.

He has added in holograph: I've had five offers of copies of 'Sixty Years a Queen' ( whihc is apparently still available, as the Pakenhams immediately bought a copy, & confirmed that the picture in question was the Charge of the Heavy [underlined] Brigade.

Pay to Lady Montfort's Bearer the sum of Eighy seven Shillings & charge the same to | Your Humble Servt. | Arthur Murphy. A bold and impressive signature. Note: A, He studied at Jesuit run Saint-Omer, France, and was a gifted student of the Latin and Greek classics. He worked as an actor in the theatre, became a barrister, a journalist and finally a (not very original) playwright. He edited Gray's Inn Journal between 1752 and 1754.
