Forty pages, octavo. In original cream stapled printed wraps. Good though somewhat worn and dogeared at corners, and with wraps creased, stained and with marks from rusty staples. Six essays: 'This Sorry Scheme of Things' by Atiyah; 'A Personal Communication' by Khan; 'Reflections on Islamic Art' by Thabet; 'Towards An Arab Federation' by Ibrahim; 'Algazel in the 13th Century Scholasticism' by Fakhri; and 'The Meaning of the Calamity (Book Summary)' by Zuraiq. With loose leaf printed subscription form. No record found (COPAC, BLC).

Disbound, worn and some pages chipped, but text complete, worn leather spine with title "Circulars to Surveyors 1876 [-1883]", first six pages comprise a manuscript index to contents. The contents comprise a presumably comprehensive collection of the circulars sent to "Heads of Departments and Surveyors" of the General Post Office between 1876 and 1883, some folded (some of those with tears but still complete).

Orig. bds, worn, rebacked, pp. viii.334, with two-page list of books published by Winter'sche (Liebig's and others). Laid down on front cover: a one-page list of readers at a German library, headed by the title of the book, publishing information (1774, etc) and cost, and with a list of dates from 3 Jan. to 13 June 1775 and names. Surnames and and titles are given and include Prof Reclam, Coccius and "Gr Dr Friedlander", the former two suggesting the medical faculty at Leipzig at that time, and Friedlander, the discoverer of the "Friedlander bacillus".

12 pages, octavo. Unbound. Folded once, down the centre, vertically. Good, though grubby, and with marks from paperclip. Each of the three contributes a section. PRESENTATION COPY, with slip from Samuel, on his notepaper '32, PORCHESTER TERRACE, W.2.' on which is typed 'WITH LORD SAMUEL'S COMPLIMENTS'.

48pp., 12mo, unopened save title, original green wrappers, chipped, good condition"Yr Ail Argraffiad" (Second edition - no record found of a "First"). The author, in a "Notice" (the only English in the work), says "I have disposed of my Book called "The American," to Mr. J. Jones Printer, Llanrwst, and grant to him all the right and Claim to the same. / B.W. Chidlaw, A.M. / Paddy's Run, Ohio. / Llanrwst Decr. 25, 1839. The purpose of the pamphlet is to encourage Welsh emigration to Ohio, Indiana and Illinois at an interesting time.

4 volumes, 4to, each with a preface by John Oldcastle. Number one: Sir Charles Grandison, 36 pages, 6 illustrations; number two: Solomon Gessner ("The Swiss Theocritus"), 28 pages, 6 illustrations and extra portrait; number three: Thomson's Seasons, 32 pages, 4 illustrations and extra portrait; number four: Tristram Shandy, 28 pages, 6 illustrations. All four numbers replete with attractive vignettes. Only these four numbers were published (vide number four, page 4). Each of the four numbers has an eight-page publishers' catalogue at the end.

C. L. Gruneisen (DNB), journalist, music critic, editor of the Great Gun. He explores the possibility that the author of Peter Priggins might write for the Great Gun, explaining his policy and agreeing "in Masonic confidence" to give him the names of the principal contributors.(Presumably these names were sent by George Alder above.) According to DNB, Gruneisen edited the Great Gun from 16 Nov. to 28 June 1845, prob. the life of this weekly. (Copy in British Library Newspaper Library.) WITH: Mrs. C.L.

Disbound, poor condition. SIGNED by George Bancroft (American historian and politician, 1800-1891). Bancroft is listed as an alumnus in this book.

Thirty-two pages. Octavo. In original light-blue illustrated printed wraps. A scarce item, in frail condition, with the wraps worn, spotted and frayed, particularly at the spine. Closed tears to reverse of wraps, which is stamped 'MAY BE HAD OF J.S. CROPLEY, WINDSOR'. Rust staining from staples. Internally sound, tight and generally clean, with bottom outside corner dogeared. Ownership inscription of Tom Rowland Kent.

32pp., 8vo, original wraps, soiled, in workmanlike buckram binding. Michael Davitt had the chair and introduced the speaker. Enclosed: autograph note signed by John Burns to "Mr Lane", Battersea, 6 August 1937, on epage, chipped, fold marks, text clear. He declines an invitation.

'Amongst all the institutions which contribute to strengthen the bonds of society, by establishing and confirming that mutual trust and confidence among men which is necessary to its very existence, there is none which exercises a more considerable and beneficial influence than that of oaths, when applied to those purposes for which it was intended.' Scarce: only three copies on COPAC.

Octavo. 64 pages. Disbound pamphlet from the Churchill Babington collection. Very good. 'In the spring and autumn of the year 1859, four or five vestries were summoned in the parish in which I reside for the purpose of laying a Church-rate. The numerous entreaties made to the supporters of that measure to refrain from it, were met by a resolute, and not always by a courteous refusal.

A Christmas keepsake. Eight pages, 12mo. Unbound. Grubby but in good condition. INSCRIBED at head of title 'Having got through the Valley - R. H.' The usual French cynicism: 'Nothing can be such a bore | As: a locked door; | Or a banquet, without the least appetite for food; | Or a woman whom you have already, and finally, understood.' and 'To your spouse you owe fidelity by contract. | But discretion in infidelity is a debt of honour.'
