Hastings, a contemporary of Gordon's at the Medical School, was later to have a distinguished medical career and to help found the British Medical Association.

M'Kinnal became a ship's surgeon, and contributed to Boyle's, "A Practical Medico-Historical Account of the Western Coast of Africa ..." as well as articles, subjects including yellow fever and black vomit.

Having received the unnamed recipient's letter at Horndean that morning, he writes that there is no reason why he should not 'take to morrow Week, in place of to morrow, as I know it will be equally convenient to His Majesty'.

4pp, 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of tissue from mount adhering to one edge. Folded three times. An interesting letter, in which Halford asks Ellis for assistance in the writing of royal biographies for the Royal College of Physicians (of which he was President from 1820 to 1844), while explaining that it would not be 'proper' to go 'lower' than George II.

3pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged, with evidence of mount on reverse of second leaf, which is endorsed 'Dr. Forbes Winslow'. Two central folds, one vertical and one horizontal. The male recipient is unnamed. He is 'quite unfit to go up to London to-day', 'owing to the fatigue I underwent yesterday travelling a long distance into Northamptonshire to see a patient'.

4pp, 4to. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to one edge. Seventy-four lines of closely and neatly written text. Although the date is somewhat early, the recipient may be Lovell Reeve, editor until 1865 of 'Portraits of Men of Eminence in Literature, Science, and Art, with Biographical Memoirs' (1863-1867). Having received the recipient's letter on his 'return from abroad', Holland states his 'general objection to the biography of living men'.

2pp, 12mo. In fair condition, on aged paper, with slight damage at head repaired with archival tape, and thin strip from stub of mount adhering to one edge. He asks Owen to 'alter or add to the paper sent herewith in any way you please, so that it may harmonize with the report you have drawn up, & represent the meaning you may intend to convey'. He will 'call at the College in the course of the day & affix my signature to the completed document'.

2pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with the text of the letter on both sides of the first leaf, and the address on the reverse of the second leaf, only half of which is present after a central vertical cut. Strip of stub from mount adhering to one edge. Folded three times. The letter is addressed, after the valediction, 'For Mr Churchill', and addressed on the second leaf to 'Mr. Churchill | Prince's Street | Soho'. The letter begins: 'Dear Sir, | I am about to give up lecturing.

Both letters in good condition, lightly aged. Both bifoliums, and both signed 'Charles Hastings'. ONE: 25 January 1846. 4pp, 12mo. He is 'glad to hear' that Phillipps is thinking of 'coming down to one of our evening meetings at the Natural History Society' (Hastings being the chairman). The date for the next meeting will be fixed on the following day, and Hastings' son, who is a member of the committee, will communicate with Phillipps. 'Our last meeting went off very well.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. Addressed to 'My dear Warden', and sending his 'kind regards to Mrs Hyslop & yourself', and so addressed to Rev. Archibald Richard Frith Hyslop (1866-1926), Warden of Trinity College, Glenalmond. He has received Hyslop's letter on his 'return from a Highland visit'. He gives his reasons for having to leave early on the following Monday and Tuesday (a journey to Perth and another to Oban).

4pp., 4to. Bifolium. Signed at end: 'Edward Seymour | Jesus Coll. | March. 1815.' In fair condition, lightly aged. Holograph manuscript of the poem 'Wallace', in 78 lines, Iambic pentameters. Preceded by the following note: 'Lines written for the Chancellor's medal for English Poetry, in the University of Cambridge. In consequence of illness they were never completed.' Apparently unpublished.

48pp., 12mo. Disbound pamphlet without wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, with slight staining to outer leaves. A guide to health for the common people, with remedies. Written in Welsh, with a scattering of words in English. Williams is described on the title-page as 'Awdwr Y “Salmydd Cenhedlaethol,” “Ceinion Cerddoriarth Gorawl Ac Eglwysig,” “Hymnau Nadolig,” &c., &c. Two-page 'Rhagymadrodd' by 'Hafrenydd.

2pp., 4to. Signed 'Faithfully yours | Eva . C . E. Lückes. | Matron.' In fair condition, lightly aged. On two leaves attached with a brass stud. A circular letter, addressed to 'Miss Winifred M. S. Parry, || 69, Vernham Road, | Plumstead, S.E.' Having received the references and agreement form, she informs her that her name 'has been added to our list of accepted Candidates with a view to filling a vacancy which will occur at our Preliminary Training School on June 1st 1912'.

Two items bound together. 40pp., 8vo, and [2] + 31pp., 8vo. Stapled into black printed wraps, with title in white on cover: 'Two Talks to the Nurses of the London Hospital, Dec. 1897, Dec. 1905.' The first talk (1897) is titled: 'A Talk to the Nurses of the London Hospital'. Holland states: 'I am proud, Nurses, of being at the head of what I believe to be one of the best nursed hospitals in England, and it is an added joy to me to be associated in the work with a woman whose life's work it has been to perfect hospital nursing, [i.e.

64pp., 12mo. Disbound pamphlet without wraps. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Two poems, the first on a biblical topic and the second on an outbreak of cholera. Three copies on COPAC: at the National Library of Wales, Cardiff, and the British Library. Now extremely scarce.

This document is of particular interest as it concerns the foundation of the institution that would become the Royal Free Hospital, Liverpool. As a result of the meeting described in the present document, the Institution for the Care and Prevention of Contagious Fevers opened in 1802 at 2 Constitution Row, Grays Inn Lane. It was the first voluntary fever hospital and had 15 beds. 2pp., 8vo. On a leaf which appears to have been extracted from a minute book. On laid paper with watermark 'JOSEPH COLES | 1799'.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. He offers him a choice of engravings, explaining his constraints; 'Aussi vous savez entre amis et artists un traitement secondaire sera indigne'. There is also Haden had strong connections with France; according to his entry in the Oxford DNB, he completed 'his professional studies in the medical schools of the Sorbonne, Paris, and Grenoble, where he acted as prosecteur in 1839, and, later, lecturer on surgical anatomy at the military hospital'.

Anderson College was founded in 1796 following the will of John Anderson, Professor of Natural Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. Initially known as Anderson’s Institution, in 1828 it changed its name to Anderson’s University and finally to Anderson’s College in 1877. Its medical school was founded in 1800 when Dr John Burns commenced lectures on anatomy and surgery. In 1887 the medical school of Anderson’s College became a separate and distinct institution known as Anderson’s College Medical School. It merged with Glasgow University in 1947.

Both in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: To 'Miss Smith'. 2pp., 12mo. He 'would like the tumour very much, and a photo if you have it of the baby with the tumour in situ'. If the tumour proves of interest he would request 'Dr Milburn's permission to send it to the Royal College of Surgeons'. TWO: To 'Mr Milburn'. 2pp., 12mo. He is returning his specimens. 'I am at a loss to say much about this specimen as it requires a careful and very detailed examination to decide its nature.' After Milburn has shown the specimen to his 'society' he asks him to send it 'to Mr Shallock of the R.

Both in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: 14 June 1874. He is enclosing his 'photo' and hopes to get Milburn's in exchange, 'with your Autograph on the back'. He sends his regards to Milburn's father and mother. TWO. 21 August 1879. 2pp., 12mo. He received the photograph with pleasure and thanks him for it. He is glad to hear that Milburn's father is better and sends his regards to both parents.

3pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and worn, with minor traces of stub adhering to the blank reverse of the second leaf. Headed 'Private'. In reply to his letter he informs him that 'the post of Admiralty Surgeon & Agent at Hull has already been filled up by the appointment of Dr Roe who was formerly in the Navy'. He ends by informing him that he sent his nephew 'a permit to fish some little time ago'.

Impressively printed in black on one side of a 58 x 43 cm sheet. In fair condition, aged and worn, with slight loss to the edge on one side, and light creasing. Impressively laid out in copperplate, beneath the College's coat of arms. The signatures are arranged in two columns, with the first two bracketted as 'Vice Presidents': '[left-hand column] J. W.

1p., 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with loss to a few words of engraved text. A good piece of Royal Society ephemera: a nicely engraved form, with ornate letterhead. Addressed to 'A. Ramsay Esq | FGS', and signed 'M. Foster'. Acknowledging Ramsay's 'mark of consideration' in sending 'Scientific Roll. Vol. 1. Nos. 4-7'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Evidently responding to an order from an exhibition catalogue for one of her sculptures, she thanks her for her 'note and enclosed cheque which was quite right - Number 16 is not yet taken so I will put it down to your name'.

4pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged. The letter would appear to relate to the formation of the American Society for Psychical Research. Six days before the writing of the present letter, on 23 September 1884, Minot had been a member of a committee of nine scientists who met at Boston to consider the advisability of the formation of a society for psychical research in America, William James being another member.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Undertaking to make an appointment 'in the course of a few days'.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, with the Society's oval date stamp. He thanks him for the 'kindly renewed invitation to lecture at the R.S.A. As you surmise, I am too much engaged at present to put together anything worthy of so august a body.' He is 'collecting material & perhaps at that indefinite date - "after the war" - I may be able to put it into shape'. He concludes: 'We miss you at the Chadwick'.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. He asks her to help him once again 'with the Women's Wards in the London Hospital'. He hopes that the enclosure (not present) will interest her: 'I am sending it instead of the familiar booklet "To Women".' He concludes, presumably in reference to the war, 'Whatever is being done, the relief of suffering women must not be left undone.'
