A wartime pamphlet, the latest reference in which is to 'the "demonstration" vote of the Socialist Party in the Reichstag, July, 1918, against the Budget', and thus written between that date and the end of the war. The author's message is summed-up in his conclusion: 'Franz Mehring is right in declaring that the old German Social Democracy is dead.

The body of which he is the founder has now a membership of over 2,500,00, and he is consequently entitled to speak authoritatively for organised labour in the United States.' Headings: 'International Conferences' and 'In Freedom's Cause'. No copy in the British Library.

Both items in good condition, on lightly aged paper. PAMPHLET: 23pp., thin 12mo (15 x 7.5 cm.). Stapled; in blue printed wraps, with two 15 x 16.5 cm. fold-outs carrying four maps.

Three copies on COPAC: at Birmingham, the British Library, and Senate House. Nicely printed by Rouffe of Paris, with separate sections on the British, French, German and Italian Peace Awards, with an 'Annex' on the American Peace Award.

4pp., 8vo. Bifolium. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. 'No. 33' in top right-hand corner of first page, which is headed by National War Aims medallion featuring George slaying the dragon. The two central papers carry 'The Prime Minister's Declaration', with headings: 'What we are NOT fighting for', 'What we ARE fighting for' ('In Europe', 'In Asia and Africa', 'General', 'Conclusions'. The back page carries 'Endorsements of the Prime Minister' by Clemenceau, Albert Thomas, President Wilson, Arthur Henderson, J. H. Thomas, Lord Lansdowne and Ramsay Macdonald.

Headings: 'Support Russia!', 'No Annexations and No Indemnities and the Right of Peoples to determine their own Government', 'Russia demands our practical sympathy, shall she have it?' and 'The Peace Negotiations could begin to-morrow'. The document begins: 'The British people have acclaimed the Russian Revolution.

12pp., 8vo. Stapled. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. 'This Statement was delivered to a meeting of the Representatives of Labour called to consider the question of further efforts for the prosecution of the war.

The three items are uniform in layout with silhouette portraits of the authors on the covers, and measure 14.5 x 8 cm. All three in fair condition, aged and worn. It begins: 'On 25th July, 1943, Mr. Churchill wrote "I consider Wingate should command the army against Burma. [...]"'.

4pp., 8vo. In good condition, with light signs of age. A lively and vivid account, as the opening indicates: '"Ah!

Both items in good condition, on yellow paper. Apparently written as an entry in a work of reference, but no evidence of publication discovered. ONE: Later draft. 10pp., 4to. Single spaced. Begins: 'ROOSEVELT, FRANKLIN DELANO was born on January 30th 1882, the only son of James and Sara Delano Roosevelt.

On 6 x 11.5 cm strip of paper. In good condition, with light signs of age. Reads: 'Yours truly | Chas Napier'. On the lower part of the page, in another hand: 'Signature of Admiral Sir Chas. Napier'. Presumably cut from a letter in response to a request for an autograph.

159pp., 8vo. In good condition, with light signs of age and wear, in a card folder with 'Best Copies | A | Nurse Phipps | War Diaries | (1939-45)' in autograph on front. Each page of the typescript is on one side of a separate leaf.

2pp., folio. In fair condition, on aged paper. He writes that two of his aides-de-camp belong to the 'famille distinguée' of Duverger, and asking for assistance in obtaining preferment for a third in the service of the King of Westphalia. The document is annotated by the recipient at the head of the first page.

1p., folio. In fair condition, on aged paper. The petition is headed 'A Monsieur le Baron de Schonen | liquidateur de l'ancienne liste civile', with 'Sallemant' (the name of the petitioner) beneath it in another hand. Clausel's note, of eleven lines of a few words each, is in the left-hand margin, and recommends to 'la bienveillance de Mr. de Schonen' the petition of a woman who describes herself as 'une malheureuse veuve'. Laid down on the reverse is a piece of card, carrying a biographical note in English in an nineteenth-century hand.

On 4.5 x 13 cm piece of paper, cut from a letter. In fair condition, on aged paper, with slight damage (not affecting signature) at outer edges caused by removal from album. Reads: 'Yrs truly | G Bancroft'.

15 + [1]pp., 12mo. Unbound pamphlet. In fair condition, lightly aged, with strip of adhesive tape on spine. 'Corrected Copy' in manuscript at head of title-page, and minor manuscript emendation on p.13. Address made at the Society's inaugural meeting, and ranging in topic from Carnarvon's ancient history to 'The Terrible Competition of the Age'. Scarce: no copy on COPAC.

169pp., 12mo. Covering the whole of a ruled notebook in black waxed cloth binding. In fair condition, aged and worn, in like binding with some damage to spine. Ownership signature of 'A. C. Collyer' on front free endpaper, with the word 'Notes' written under it, and beneath that a seal (hand holding a sword) in red wax. The notebook has been compiled by at least three different parties (with a couple of notes in shorthand), and is certainly the work of instructors rather than students, possibly Scottish.

14pp., 8vo, lacking back cover, formerly bound in miscellaneous volume, hence some staining and minor wear at spine, front cover grubby. One page printed at an angle with loss of one or two letters. No copy listed on COPAC or WorldCat but a copy available in the State Library of S. Australia. Note: Information from Wikipedia entry and its references, e.g. the obit in 'The Advertiser' (link given). For example he 'erected' the first permanent building in Fort Augusta.

Of the twelve items (all black and white), the ten small photographs are uniform at 7 x 9 cm; the portrait of Scovell is 21 x 13 cm., and the image of the Spion Kop battlefield 14.5 x 11 cm. Accompanied by a note by Scovell on a slip of paper: 'Relics of the S. African Campaign | 1901-1902 | belonging to G. J. S. S'. The ten small pictures and are in good condition, loose and in an envelope.

Printed on both sides of a 15 x 11 cm piece of card. In good condition, lightly-aged. Unsigned autograph note by Scovell on reverse: 'Drawn up by me when adjt.

Educated at Haileybury and Sandhurst, Scovell was gazetted to the Cameron Highlanders in 1900 and served with the regiment in the latter part of the Boer War (his diaries for the period being among material offered separately). He served on the General Staff in the First World War, and was appointed deputy Director-General of Recruiting in 1917, retiring from the Army the following year. Educated at Haileybury and Sandhurst, Scovell was gazetted to the Cameron Highlanders in 1900 and served with the regiment in the latter part of the Boer War (his diaries for the period being among material offered separately). The present paper is well-written and the fruit of experience. Scovell's views were clearly well-received, as he was appointed deputy Director-General of Recruiting at the end of the First World War. He begins by telling him that there is 'no chance of an exchange to this Battalion, all were asked lately and said they did not wish to exchange to the 1st Battn.' He suggests that Scovell's 'best chance' is to 'fill a vacancy caused by a Promotion', in which case he may be 'brought in instead of their gazetting a youngster to us'.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Addressed to 'Dear Sir', but with the rest written in French. He explains that it is with reluctance that he is unable to leave paris and attend the 'Congrès de Statistique', and that it is always with pleasure that he visits England. He refers to a 'traite de Commerce' and the 'Conseil Superieur du Commerce, dont j'ai l'honneur d'etre membre'. The letter is accompanied by an engraved portrait of 'The Late M. Michel Chevalier', cut from a magazine. On 14 x 9 cm paper. In good condition, lightly-aged.

1p., 4to. On bifolium. Addressed, with broken seal in black wax, on reverse of second leaf, to 'Charles MacIntosh Esqr - &c &c'. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. He apologises for being 'unable to attend to pay the usual last Duty to the Remains of your excellent Father & my Friend', but assures MacIntosh that 'no man more sincerely laments his Departure than I do'. He ends in the hope that 'the great & gracious God may sanctify this Dispensation to all concerned'. Signe 'Your much afflicted but very faithful & obedt. Humble Sert. | H: Macleod | College | 29 July 1807'.

He begins by stating that he has sent the 'differents papiers' of which he spoke that morning. He next reminds the recipient of 'l'affaire du brave colonel Pozac', regarding which 'vous avez bien voulu charger d'etre mon ambassadeur auprès du maréchal'.
