The signature (beneath the words '4 Sept. 1728 | Recd in full', in another hand) is on the reverse of part of a printed Treasury document, completed in manuscript, recording payment to 'Francis Cudworth Masham Esqr. Accountant General to the Court of Chancery', 'in Repayment of Loan on the Seventeenth 4s. Aid, Ano 1727'.

Harington' and 'Memo in Rob Harington's Handwriting'. Includes works in English, French and Italian, the earliest being Wright's 'Rutland', 1684 ('B P. Stuart of T. | Marianne Harrington [sic] 1834') and the latest O. M. Mitchell's 'Orbs of Heaven', 1853 ('R Harington'). From the Harington family papers.

A long and detailed letter, asking, '[i]n accordance with a resolution of the Wts. & Measures Committee', for Harington's opinion on a point of law, in relation to the charging of fees by inspectors, with reference to 'the provisions of the Acts of 1878 and 1889' and the 'decision in Rex v. Roberts'. Towards the conclusion Anthony states: 'The Wts.

The printed pedigree is 25pp., 4to. Stitched. Worn and aged, in heavily-worn buff printed wraps. Inscribed on front cover to 'Churton. | From the Author | 11 October 1887.' The first part of the document reads: 'Recorded 24 Decembr 1701 | Received of the Lord ffitcharding three hundred pounds part of an Order of ten thousand two hundred pounds out of the 4½ P Cents for Secrett Service'. Below this, in the right-hand margin, Ferne has written: 'Three Hundred Pounds | Hen: Ferne | ple of 10200 | Pr Secret Service | 22 Decr. 1701'. At the foot of the page, in another hand: 'Witness. | Rd: Porter'.

1p., 8vo. Removed from an Exchequer ledger. On aged paper, with particular wear to one edge. Laid out in the usual way, with printed text completed in manuscript. Good firm signature. Recording a payment of £150, on an annuity of £300 per annum, 'during the Life of [Mary, Francis & George Wollaston]' (his three surviving children, two others having died). Signed at the foot of the page, with the signature of the witness 'W Wright' beside it. In manuscipt on reverse: 'Paid 31 July 1765 | £1636 : 2 : 6'.

On 15 x 12 cm. piece of paper, cut from a printed document completed in manuscript. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper, laid down on square of plain paper. Payment of an annuity ('for carrying on the War, and other Her Majesty's Occasions').

1p., 8vo. In poor condition, aged and worn, with loss to edges and holing around the signature. Begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'The [-9] Day of [ffebry] <...> | Received by me [Daniel Malthus] | [Execd as P Margin] | Of the Right Honourable Robert Earl of Northampton, One of the Four Tellers of His Majesty's Receipt of Exchequer, the Sum of | [Fifty Pounds] | [...]'. The annuity has been raised on 'Rates and Duties upon all Wines imported into Great Britain, and for raising a certain Sum of Money for the Service of the year 1745'. According to T. R.

The background to this document is ably explained in an article in the Spectator, 27 December 1834, 'The Spy System: Richmond versus Marshall and Miles', which begins: 'The Court of Exchequer was occupied the whole of Saturday and Monday last with the trial of an action of libel, brought by Alexander Baillie Richmond, the individual for many years known in Scotland by the title of "Richmond the Spy," against Messrs. Simpkin and Marshall, the London publishers of Tait's Edinburgh Magazine.

27pp., small 4to. In vellum-paper wraps with decorative cover printed in red and brown. With six plates: two collotypes (portraits of Edmund Hodgson and Henry Hill Hodgson) and four black and white photographs: 'Exterior of Premises, 115, Chancery Lane', 'The Auction Room', 'Compiling a Catalogue (First Floor Room)' and 'Unpacking a Library (Basement)'. Title-page in red and black. In fair condition, internally good, on aged and worn paper, lacking free endpapers. A characteristically-tasteful production by the Chiswick Press. Now scarce.

On one side of a 10 x 12.5 cm piece of card. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Signed 'C C Wakefield' and granting admission to 'the representative of the [ Pall Mall ]', the trial beginning on 12 December 1907. Annotated around Wakefield's signature: 'For the trial of Robert Wood for the murder of Emily Dimmock, of St Paul's Road, Camden Town | Judge - W Justice Grantham | Leading Conuncil - Sir Charles Mathews for the prosecution; Mr Marshall Halll for the defence. | Verdict - Not guilty.'

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with small stain at head of first page. Docketed on reverse of second leaf. The letter concerns Hardwicke's direction that Harry Court Amiel, son of 'Captain Amiel, Hounslow Barracks, Hounslow', be nominated 'for a Cavalry Cadetship in Bengal'. Amiel has been 'a Cornet in the 7th Regt of Dragoons, (or Hussars as they are called)' for a year, and 'bears a very good character from his Commanding Officer'.
