SIR

Five items, the first four printed and the fifth an ALS. Four of them in good condition, with light signs of age; the fifth (Item Two below) somewhat aged and worn. An account of this abortive scheme – first proposed in 1758 – is to be found on pp.424-427 of Joseph Priestley's 'Historical Account of the Navigable Rivers, Canals, and Railways, of Great Britain' (1831). The scheme finally failed in 1832, when the bank of Sir George Duckett (see Item Five below) failed, and he became bankrupt. Only the Stort Navigation was completed. ONE: 'London and Cambridge Junction Canal.

36pp., 12mo. Stapled in grey printed wraps. On worn and aged paper. A list of 791 titles, with commentary and index. In an introductory paragraph Cardinall explains that as 'the Gold Coast is merely a conventional term for a portion of Western Africa which belongs to the British Crown, and has no definite boundaries save arbitrary ones of European agreement', it is 'impossible to confine oneself to works dealing exclusively with that portion of the world which we know as the Gold Coast.

2pp., 12mo. Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The text reads: '[...] dont think you are giving trouble - | Would you like me to secure you a smart little single handed boat - an ideal boat for sailing about the river with a lady? | Or is it not worth while from the point of view that your wife will not like you going on the water & taking her | Yours Ever | W. Scoresby Routledge'. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington (1861-1931) of Ridlington, 12th Baronet, who was at Christ Church, Oxford, with Routledge.

The nine items are in good condition, lightly aged and worn. They derive from the papers of Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington, and reflect his dual position as a leading member of the Standing Council of the Baronetage, and a member of the Home Office Committee, which was set up to consider and report whether any, and if so what, steps should be taken to safeguard the status of the holders of Baronetcies, and to prevent the assumption of the title Baronet by persons who have no right thereto'.

3pp., large 8vo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged and worn. Headed 'Original'. Docketed on reverse of second leaf: 'May 1835 | £75. 7. 5. | Richardson a/c for Sir James Harington decd | paid | paid additional balance - £1. 16 -'. The ninth baronet died in 1835, the tenth baronet assuming the title at the age of fourteen. The present document was evidently produced to clear the old account. It contains numerous items, dated between 10 January 1834 and 8 December 1835.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, on an aged and worn bifolium. The document, in a Chancery hand, has been written out by the witness John Weekes. It reads: 'Received the Tenth day of January Anno dni 1643. of my brother John Croke the Sume of one thousand pounds of lawfull money of England wch. sume of one thousand pounds was given me by my ffather Sr. John Croke late of Chilton in the Contie of Bucks Knight, and for the true paymt.

Five letters, each 1p., 4to. In fair condition, aged and creased. ONE: Palace Theatre, 4 July 1912. In capitals. Conveying the thanks of the King and Queen to the members of the orchestra for their work at the previous night's royal performance, and adding, for Finck: 'I have already told you how much I appreciate what you did on Monday night and the splendid manner in which you conducted. The success of the performance would have been impossible without your invaluable assistance.' TWO: Garrick House, 23 March 1921.

Ten unpaginated 26 x 22 cm. leaves, comprising three leaves of letterpress (cover, title and back cover), and seven leaves each with a 17 x 14 cm black-and-white photograph laid down. A frail survival, with the photographic portraits in good condition, but the brittle leaves chipped and discoloured. One bifolium intact (with remains of string binding), all the other leaves detached and loose, making it difficult to ascertain whether the item is or is not complete. (The entry for the only copy traced on OCLC WorldCat, at the Universitätsbibliothek Bayreuth, describes it as ' 6 Bl.

3pp., 4to. Bifolium. In fair condition, aged and creased with a few short closed tears. The reverse of the second leaf carries red wax seal with a good impression and two postmarks, and is addressed by Blore to Harington in Berkeley Square. Neatly and closely written, beginning: 'I am favoured with your letter and send you underneath the questions which I shall be glad to have answered to enable me to complete your Pedigree, down to the present time, for the History of Rutland.

8pp., 12mo. On two bifoliums. In good condition, lightly aged. The letter begins: 'I think your Mr. B charges a long price for his relics and if the tomb of Sir John Chappell who apparently married a Harington is in existence you mght have as good drawing for it for the money. (Five Guineas!) The Print however may be rare but of that I am no judge.

10pp., 8vo. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, on ten leaves held together with a brass stud. With a number of deletions and emendations. The first paragraph reads: 'Rex v Alvarez | Rex v Galliano | This was an application by the Attorney General acting on the instructions of the British Minister in Morocco that certain dies, a punching machine & a quantity of

Thirteen items from the Harington family papers. Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington, 12th Baronet, was educated at Eton and Christ College, Cambridge. Called to the Bar in 1886, he practised as a barrister on the Oxford Circuit before taking up an appointment as a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899, serving in that capacity until returning home in 1913. In later years he acted as Justice of the Peace and Deputy Lieutenant for Herefordshire. The collection is in fair condition, aged and worn.

9pp., 4to. On grey laid paper. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, on nine leaves held together with a pin. He begins by discussing Harington's 'first motion, viz, "that all persons who are in custody for the purpose of detention merely and not in execution of a penal Sentence for an Offence should be subjected to one uniform discipline"'. Other topics discussed include: 'the proposal "That power be given to the Courts to place any person convicted of felony and not sentenced to Hard labor on rules for 1st.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. The previous day he saw Sir John Edge, who was 'formerly Ch[ief]. Justice of the North West Province and is now a member of the Indian Council at home'. Chalmers discussed Harington with Edge, who would be glad to see him 'any time at the India Office'. Chalmers encourages Harington to arrange the meeting, as Edge 'is an exceedingly good fellow & was far the best of the Indian C. J's - | He suggested that you should get a testimonial from A. T. Lawrence'.

The eight range in size from 14 x 10 cm to 11.5 x 10 cm. Most are heavily faded, almost to the point of indistinguishableness, but presumably recoverable using modern computer techniques. Each is stamped on the front 'PROOF TO BE RETURNED TO LAFAYETTE, LONDON'. Each with pencil note on the back identifying the sitter as 'Mrs. Harrington', with reference number and date in October 1905. From the papers of Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington, the sitter being identified by reference from other material therein.

2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper. A cordial and businesslike missive, reading: 'My dear Harington | Judges at least old ones like myself do not give testimonials to men at the Bar seeking appointments | But you may with pleasure say that you have my permission to refer to me & that may be of use to you; or it may not for the indian Secretary does not know me personally & he may not therefore refer to me at all'.

On one side of a folio leaf, with the accounts ('By Order, | D. W. MARDEN, | Hon. Sec. GENERAL AND FINANCE COMMITTEE') taking up the whole of one side, and the leaf folded into a bifolium, with the report of the Annual General Meeting on the other side, as the recto of the first leaf. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn, Addressed, with stamp and 5 March 1892 postmark, to 'R. Harington Esq | 1 New Court | Temple | EC.' The report of the AGM includes notification of the names of new committee members, of an alteration to subscription rates, and of a discrepancy in the 'Canteen Accounts'.

7 + [1]pp., 8vo, with fold-out pedigree. Unbound and stitched. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The 25 x 42 cm fold-out is headed 'Pedigree illustrative of the marriages of the daughters and coheirs of Sir Nigel Loryng, K.G., XXth Founder of the Order of the Garter, and of the families with whom they and their descendants became allied, namely: Haryington, Peyvre, Cogan, Fitz Waryn, Broughton, Courtenay, St.

The two items from the papers of Sir Richard Harington of Ridlington, 12th Baronet, who features as 'R. Harrington [sic]' in the 'Progress Return'. The pamphlet is 6pp., 12mo. The front page is headed, with crown-and-anchor device, 'Royal Naval Artillery Volunteers. | London Brigade. | Head Quarters, | H.M.S. Frolic, off Somerset House, W.C | December, 1891.' Printed by Woodfall & Kinder, Printers, 70 to 76, Long Acre, London, W.C.' Aged and grubby. Folded into a packet and addressed, with postmarked Halfpenny Red stamp, to 'R.

Victoria County History, Cambridgeshire, Volume 10, describes how, on the death in 1812 of Admiral Sir Charles Cotton, Landwade Manor 'passed to his son Sir St. Vincent Cotton who came of age in 1822. In 1850 he sold Landwade to Alexander Cotton, probably his younger brother (b. 1804).

Each of the six letters is 1p, 4to. In good condition, on lightly aged and worn paper. With the Society's stamps and annotations. On topics including the printed version of a paper given by Hadfield and the offer to the society of a paper by his friend 'Mr E. P. Reynolds of Bournemouth' (whose father 'Mr E. Reynolds […] was the mainspring of the Engineering side of Messrs Vickers, Sheffield').

1p., landscape 12mo. On aged and worn paper, with strip of discoloration affecting Richardson's signature. The text concerns 'the numbers of the Madras Journal [which] have not yet turned up'. Accompanied by an unattrtibuted newspaper cutting of Richardson's obituary, laid down on a leaf removed from a notebook.

On 6 x 9.5 cm piece of paper. In good condition, laid down on slightly-larger piece of paper (part of leaf from an album). Grant's distinctive forward-sloping signature at centre. At top of paper: '<...> Reign, Annoque Domini 1868.' Beneath the signature, in a contemporary hand: 'Sir John Peter Grant Lieut-Governor of Central Provinces of India during Mutiny. [sic] Governor-General of Jamaica born 1807'.

5pp., 12mo. On two bifoliums. With the Society's oval Adelphi date stamp. In fair condition, on lightly-aged paper, with slight rust-staining from paperclip. She begins by asking if 'there would be any difficulty in my examining Barry's paintings at the Adelphi, & taking a few notes on them. | My old friend & my husband's colleague at the British Museum, Mr.

1p., 8vo. On aged and worn paper, with slight chipping to edges, and some light damp damage. The usual printed document, completed in manuscript. Begins (manuscript text in square brackets): 'Received of the Officers of the Tally-Court, one Tally levied on His Majesties Hereditary Revenue of Excize [...] due unto [St. Thomas Hospitall in Southwark] for one quarter of a Year ended at [Lady Day 1681] [...] granted unto [them] by Assignment from [Sr. Edmond Turnor Knt.] out of the Yearly Rent, or Sum of [-275lb 11s] payable unto the said [Sr. Edmond Turnor] [...]'.

On 36.5 x 19 cm. piece of paper. Elwes' signature is on the reverse, with the following in another hand: '20th Decemr. 1775. | Recd in full'. Beside Elwes' signature are those of the witnesses: 'Robt. Waters' and 'Wm. Nicholls'. Text on recto, with 'Sir Jeffry Elwes Kt.' in right-hand margin, beginning: 'Order is taken this 12 day of Decr. 1775 By Virtue of his Majesty's Genl. Letters of Privy Seal bearing date the 5th.

On 14.5 x 16.5 piece of paper. In fair condition, on lightly aged paper. Laid out on the recto in the customary fashion, with printed text completed in manuscript, and being an order for payment on 13 February 1715 to 'Sr. John Cope Bart.' (i.e. the 5th Baronet), 'in Repayment of Loan on the Sixteenth 4 s. Aid, Anno 1716.' On the reverse is a cropped manuscript text, signed by the 5th Baronet 'Jo: Cope', assigning 'all my Right. Title & Interest. in this Order. Unto Sr John Cope Junr. Kt and to his Assignes', dated 14 May 1717.

1p., on 22 x 17.5 cm. piece of paper. Aged and worn with slight loss and glue staining (not affecting the signature), and laid down on part of leaf cut from an album. The usual printed text, completed in manuscript, beginning (with manuscript text in square brackets): 'ankers Annuities out of 3700l. per Week Excise. | ecord' [2d Apr. 1712 ] | Numb. [1109. 33s: P Ann] | The [10th.] Day of [April] 17[12] | Received then by me [Sr. Robt. Dashwood Assignee of Thomas ffountaine Esqr] [...]'. Signed at foot by Dashwood and the witness 'Tho Bubb' (the latter stained).

1p., 12mo. On aged paper, with particular wear to one corner. Laid out in the usual style, with printed text completed in manuscript. Begins (with manuscript text in square brackets): '[12th. March 1681] | Received of the Officers of the Tally-Court, one Tally levied on His Majesties Hereditary Revenue of Excise, containing the Sum of [three pounds] due unto me for one Quarter of a Year ended at [Michas 1682] [...]'. Signed at the foot: 'Fleetwood Dormer | for Sr. John Busby'. Busby married Mary Dormer, a kinswoman of Fleetwood Dormer of Lee Grange.
