HOSPITAL

An interesting letter regarding the early cultivation of bananas in London. 1p, 4to. In fair condition, lightly aged, with slight nicking to one edge. Neatly written over nine lines. Reads: 'Sir Everard Home is much obliged to Messrs. Laddiges for a present of some very fine Bananas, which were quite ripe, and had a flavour Sir Everard had no idea that they ever could acquire in this Climate. He mentioned yesterday to Mr Eyton with astonishment who said they had fruited at Kew, but not He believed to such perfection'.

1p., 4to. On bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to revese of second leaf, which is endorsed '5. April 1796 | Duke of Leeds.' Folded twice. Reads 'Dear Sir. | The Duke of Rutland & some of his friends being desirous of seeing Bethlem Hospital, I shall be much obliged to you for an order of admittance for His Grace & his Company. | Believe me Dear Sir | very sincerely yours | Leeds.' Richard Clark (1739-1831) was Treasurer of the Royal Hospitals of Bethlem and Bridewell.

2pp, 16mo. Bifolium, with the letter on the recto of the first leaf, and a long postscript on the recto of the second. In good condition, lightly aged, folded twice. A friend of Charles Dickens and his circle, and physician to Queen Victoria's uncle Prince Leopold, Quin founded the London Homeopathic Hospital in 1849. The letter invites Quin to 'dine with us on Tuesday the 23rd. Inst at a quarter before seven o' clock'. The pith is in the two postscripts: 'P.S.

On one side of a piece of laid paper, top half torn off and missing, leaving the conclusion of the letter. Roughly 11 x 17.5 cm. Thirteen full lines of text, with two partial lines along the tear at the top edge. A frail item, in fair condition, aged and worn. See Gifford's entry in the History of Parliament. The letter, apparently addressed to an individual at the Admiralty or the Treasury, concerns a part of the tortuous process of raising finances for the conversion of the Queen's House into the hospital.

The three items are from the papers of Winifred M. S. Parry of Plumstead, who was enrolled as a probationer in 1912. ONE: 'State Registration of Nurses'. Pamphlet in small print, 'Reprinted by kind permission of the Editor of The Nineteenth Century and After'. Printed by 'SCHOOL-PRESS, 5, Rupert Street, London, E.' 24pp., 8vo. Stapled in brown printed wraps naming the authors as 'The Hon. Sydney Holland, Chairman, London Hospital | Miss Eva C. E. Lückes, Matron, London Hospital'. Internally in fair condition, on lightly aged paper, in worn and chipped wraps with rusted staples.

2pp., 4to. Signed 'Faithfully yours | Eva . C . E. Lückes. | Matron.' In fair condition, lightly aged. On two leaves attached with a brass stud. A circular letter, addressed to 'Miss Winifred M. S. Parry, || 69, Vernham Road, | Plumstead, S.E.' Having received the references and agreement form, she informs her that her name 'has been added to our list of accepted Candidates with a view to filling a vacancy which will occur at our Preliminary Training School on June 1st 1912'.

Two items bound together. 40pp., 8vo, and [2] + 31pp., 8vo. Stapled into black printed wraps, with title in white on cover: 'Two Talks to the Nurses of the London Hospital, Dec. 1897, Dec. 1905.' The first talk (1897) is titled: 'A Talk to the Nurses of the London Hospital'. Holland states: 'I am proud, Nurses, of being at the head of what I believe to be one of the best nursed hospitals in England, and it is an added joy to me to be associated in the work with a woman whose life's work it has been to perfect hospital nursing, [i.e.

Uniform in layout. 40pp., 12mo. (No. 19) and 48pp., 12mo (No. 20). Stapled without wraps. Both worn and aged, with rusted staples. Small print. Both addressed to 'My dear Sisters and Nurses', and both signed in type 'Eva C. E. Lückes' and 'E. C. E. L.' Reviews of the two years, packed with information regarding significant events relating to the hospital. Each ending with a two-page 'List of the Names of our present Sisters', followed by 'Names and Addresses of old “Londoners.”', 'Copied from the Supplementary Register' (12pp. in 1912, and 14pp., in 1913). This document is of particular interest as it concerns the foundation of the institution that would become the Royal Free Hospital, Liverpool. As a result of the meeting described in the present document, the Institution for the Care and Prevention of Contagious Fevers opened in 1802 at 2 Constitution Row, Grays Inn Lane. It was the first voluntary fever hospital and had 15 beds. 2pp., 8vo. On a leaf which appears to have been extracted from a minute book. On laid paper with watermark 'JOSEPH COLES | 1799'.

Both in good condition, lightly aged. ONE: To 'Miss Smith'. 2pp., 12mo. He 'would like the tumour very much, and a photo if you have it of the baby with the tumour in situ'. If the tumour proves of interest he would request 'Dr Milburn's permission to send it to the Royal College of Surgeons'. TWO: To 'Mr Milburn'. 2pp., 12mo. He is returning his specimens. 'I am at a loss to say much about this specimen as it requires a careful and very detailed examination to decide its nature.' After Milburn has shown the specimen to his 'society' he asks him to send it 'to Mr Shallock of the R.

1p., 12mo. In fair condition, with small stain from mount at head of leaf. He is sending a postal order for eleven guineas, 'being the Subscription of Miss Jones & myself to the South Hants Archery Society fm 1875'. He ends in the hope that Wills and his wife have enjoyed their 'trip on the Continent'.

One page, 12mo, fold marks, signs on being tipped into an album, good conition. "Rear Admiral Sir Thomas Hardy presents his Compliments to Mr. Glynn and begs to return his best thanks for a Print of a Bridge over the River Aire."

One page, 4to, window pane mount, good condition. "I am very glad that you incline to be a Fellow of the Royal Society, because I am sure you will contribute largely to it by your researches - and be a much better attendat tha | Your very sincere | nd obedient servant | St Vincent.| [POstscript ] My Protege, Lieut. Dickens, is, I believe in the ship which bears the Flag of Adml Boyles - Lady St Vincent is something better.

38pp., 16mo. Internally in very good condition, in red paper boards printed in gilt, with bubbling at front and back, and in chipped and aged glassine wrapper. The number of the meeting has been added to the title in manuscript ('511'), and the signatures of 'Frederick Keel | Singer' and 'Walter Braithwaite' are written in pencil beneath the limitation (no 24 of 133 copies). Scarce.

2pp., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. He asks her to help him once again 'with the Women's Wards in the London Hospital'. He hopes that the enclosure (not present) will interest her: 'I am sending it instead of the familiar booklet "To Women".' He concludes, presumably in reference to the war, 'Whatever is being done, the relief of suffering women must not be left undone.'

1p., 8vo. In good condition, lightly aged and worn, laid down on leaf removed from album (with ticket and two press cuttings relating to the Honorary Degrees Ceremony on the reverse). He has seen a 'Table Talk' article in the Cambridge Daily News, and writes to thank the pseudonymous individual for 'this very great appreciation of my work'.

[7] + 69pp., 4to. In grey printed paper wraps, with brown faux-leather spine. Aged and worn. In six parts: 'Preliminary'; 'Governing Body'; 'Endowments'; 'Application of Endowments'; 'Regulations relating to Schools'; and 'Final', with pp.47-69 carrying twelve 'Schedules', ranging from 'I. - Metropolitan Parishes, Districts and Precincts affected by the abrogation of Trusts for the admission of Children therefrom' to 'XII.- Endowments for Special Prizes'. No other copy traced, either on OCLC WorldCat or on COPAC.

53 items, in good overall condition, with light signs of age and wear. An interesting collection, not only recording an interesting event in the history of a national institution, but also recording the practices of art restoration in Edwardian England. Including forty original photographs by Carey himself (one of them, signed, a splendid image of the school in Horsham under construction), a long draft report and correspondence between Carey and R. L. Frank's, the school's 'Clerk'. The following description is divided into seven sections.

34 + [1]pp., foolscap 8vo. Stitched and unbound, for folding into the customary packet ,with secondary title lengthwise on reverse of final leaf. On aged, worn and chipped paper, with small section torn away from outer margin of first leaf.

1p., 12mo. In good condition, lightly aged. Written from the Prussian Embassy. The letter reads: 'Chevalier Bunsen presents his compliments to Mr. Henry M Kemishead, and regrets, that neither his health nor his public as well as literary occupations allow him to extend the sphere of the engagements, which he has already contracted for this season, and that therefore he shall not be able to accept the invitation for the Public Dinner of St. Mary's Hospital, which he has had the honour to receive.'

2pp., 12mo. In fair condition, lightly aged, with traces of glue from mount at head of first page. He is sorry to say 'that my Presentation to Christ's Hospital has long been given away to the Orphan son of an old Harrow Pupil who died early & left his family ill provided for'. He ends by describing his family's whereabouts.

On the two sides of a folio leaf of watermarked wove paper. On one side is the copy of the 'Warrant for deducting 12s. in the Pound | To | Our Rt. trusty & Wellbeloved Counsellor Spencer Lord Wilmington, Paymr. General of Our Guards, Garrisons & Land Forces in Great Britain & Forces in Great Britain & Forces abroad | And to the Paymr. General of Our said Forces for the time being', 'By His Majestys Command | G. Oxenden | Wm. Clayton | Wm. Yonge' (but not with their signatures). Certified 'A true Copy. | Rd. Arnold'.

Three strips of paper, each with a single column of text in small print: 47 + 55 + 30 cm. Complete article, paginated to 3. The second strip has the running title 'National Guard - A Visit to Flanders - 2'. Aged and creased, and with a corner torn away from the third strip, resulting in loss of text to six lines and the running title, Two minor manuscript corrections.

1p., 8vo. On aged and worn paper, with slight chipping to edges, and some light damp damage. The usual printed document, completed in manuscript. Begins (manuscript text in square brackets): 'Received of the Officers of the Tally-Court, one Tally levied on His Majesties Hereditary Revenue of Excize [...] due unto [St. Thomas Hospitall in Southwark] for one quarter of a Year ended at [Lady Day 1681] [...] granted unto [them] by Assignment from [Sr. Edmond Turnor Knt.] out of the Yearly Rent, or Sum of [-275lb 11s] payable unto the said [Sr. Edmond Turnor] [...]'.

1p., 8vo. In fair condition, aged and worn. Laid out in the usual way, with printed text completed in manuscript. Records a payment of ten pounds on an annuity, 'during the Life of Anna Maria Tindal'. With signature of witness 'Alexr. Ross'.

1p., 4to. Very good, in envelope addressed by Haddow to 'Gerald Henderson, Esq., | 14 Bloomfield Terrace, | S.W.1.' He writes: 'Ever since becoming an hon. member of the Chelsea Arts Club I have had it in mind to give a small dinner party for some of the members. This will take place in the Boardroom of the Royal Marsden Hospital on Saturday 21 June (6.15 p.m. for 7 o'c; informal). I write to extend to you a very cordial invitation, and nothing will give me greater pleasure if you are free to accept.'

The three items are in good condition, lightly aged and worn. ONE: 19 October 1916. 2pp., 8vo. In envelope with postmark and stamp, addressed by him to his daughter at 48 Hogarth Road, South Kensington. Referring to his wife the Polish artist Janina Flamm, he regrets that he cannot 'come home for dear Janias birthday' as he cannot get leave. He is enclosing 2s 6d each for her and her brother 'Phip' [Philippe Forbes-Robertson] and sister 'Cecilia' to get presents for their mother. He sends best wishes to his brothers Leonard and Johnston.

[4]pp., 8vo. On shiny art paper. Stitched with red, white and blue ribbon into cream card wraps. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. The front cover of the wraps has the signature of 'E. Marshall-Hall' at its head, and is illustrated with a spoof coat of arms, featuring three nurses, beneath the heading 'The P.U.O.'s. (Pierrots of Unknown Origin)'. Inside the front cover is a page of spoof advertisements, with in-jokes about the performers, as well as one clearly referring to Marshall Hall: 'I will cure you of the Swearing Habit in 9 days.

38 + [1]pp., folio. Disbound. In fair condition, on aged paper, with the first leaf chipped and frayed at edges. Repaginated with a stamp 119-158. Kilmainham Hospital was a home for retired soldiers along the lines of Les Invalides, and much of the material in this paper consists of correspondence of Secretaries of State for War John Cam Hobhouse and Edward Ellice. The volume is a response to Hobhouse's proposal 'to bring into one building, and under one management, the several establishments of the in-pensioners of Chelsea and of Kilmainham hospitals.

All in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. The Grand Vizier's letter, addressed to 'The Lady Strangford' and written in a secretarial hand, is 1p., 8vo, on the recto of the first leaf of a bifolium; the autograph copy of Strangford's reply is on both sides of the second leaf of the same bifolium. The English copy of her reply is 2pp., 8vo, on a separate leaf.
