Apart from brief opening and closing paragraphs the whole of the letter is devoted to reminiscences of his life before leaving England for America. At one point he comments: 'it is only when one is thinking back, as I am now, that one realizes the speed with which time fugits; it is now 21 years since I have been home, and 30 years since Bob and I were in "Irene" at the Empire.' 5.5 x 6 cm folder, with shiny white card covers printed in gold with ornately-lettered cover reading 'MELBOURNE | Private Assembly | BALLS. | 1875.' Royal crest on back cover. The folder contains two printed leaves, the whole being attached with fancy yellow string to a delicate small white pencil with a bobble at the end. Internally the six pages (including the inside covers) consist of three facings, with a list of the ball's 18 dances (from '1. WALTZ .... Casino Tanze | Gung'l' to '18. WALTZ ....

Each letter 2pp., 12mo. On letterheads with mourning borders. In fair condition, lightly aged and worn. Both written in pencil, in a difficult and hurried hand. The first letter reads: 'I was sorry, Dear Mr. Grossmith that you cd. not come last night. I long to dance the tango with you - wh. I have now learnt - as I know we cd. do it well together. One wants imagination for these dances; & this is what you have got. Do get me invited to some ball where you will be, as I adore dancing'. The second letter is written in the same vein, with reference to 'Mr. Selfridge's dance'.

If he is not he will be 'thankful'; if he is he will 'wait patiently for a future occasion'. Kean's Richard II opened at the Princess's Theatre on 14 March 1857 and ran for 112 nights.

The inscription on the back of the photograph is dated May 1940. The other items undated.
Three black and white prints, ranging in size from 12 x 17 cm to 10 x 7.5 cm. The contact sheet is 12.5 x 13 cm. The four items in fair condition, lightly aged and worn. One of the three pictures shows a smiling Baron outdoors with a young blonde boy (his son?), who is holding a camera tripd; another shows him standing with his arm on the shoulder of another man (his brother?), both on skis in the snow; and the third shows him in a heavy wool coat, on the steps of a European building, with a man in Slavic costume. The last is inscribed on the reverse: 'May 1940 | <?>.
On a piece of paper torn from a letter, roughly 9 x 12 cm in dimensions. In fair condition, on aged and creased paper. Signed 'Votre | très respectueuse | Lucile Grahn'. The five lines of text, addressed to a man, ask for the date of his departure, and a forwarding address.

[London?] The fourteen photographs taken in preparation for Sonnabend's portrait, commissioned in 1991.
Thirteen of the fourteen photographs are in black and white, with the largest 21.5 x 15.5 cm (with slight paint staining at edge), another 17.5 x 12.5 cm, and the other nine roughly 12.5 x 9 cm. The other print is a colour polaroid, with paint smudges from Sonnabend's portrait on the white mount. Other than the paint marks to three of the prints, in good condition, although six of the smaller ones have aged due to acid in the paper stock.

He begins by stating that his book 'contains the details' his correspondent requires, and continues: 'I am sorry to say that I made a little mistake when I was talking to you over the telephone about "Pulcinella". I think I said there was a long description of that ballet in my "Diaghilev Ballet in London", but of course it is the "Complete Book of Ballets".

He informs the recipient that his portrait of Garrick is 'the second state of the engraving: the first is before all letters. | The person who engraved the lettering evidently made a mistake.' He notes an inscription sometimes found on impressions of the second state of the engraving, and change made in the third state.

Item One: Autograph Letter Signed (with a crude drawing of Buckle sitting on a rope slung between the printed names of the two magazines). 1p., 4to. On Fleet Street letterhead of 'Ballet Publications Ltd.' Dated by Alport 14 February 1950. The letter concerns an article on the conductor Karl Rankl, and begins: 'Dear Erich | I have just spoken to Harewood [the Earl of Harewood, co-founder with Buckle of 'Opera' magazine].

With faint circular stamp of the 'VICE CONSULAR SERVICE'. Manuscript note on reverse, in a contemporary hand: 'Duplicate of the <?> affiche in the town of Boulogne | on Saturday 24th Decr 1817'.

Addressed, on recto of first leaf, to 'Mr. Edd: Jones, No 6. | Little Titchfield Street | Gt. Portland Street | London.' With two postmarks (both in black ink; one reading 'OXFORD') and a black wax seal. The reverse of the second leaf has the forwarding address 'Times Office | Printing House Square | Blackfriars', with 'Walthers' above it. Letter reads 'Dr.

Dimensions of paper roughly eleven and a half inches by eight wide. A good clean impression on grubby and lightly foxed paper. A meticulous head and shoulders view of a seated Hearne, in profile, facing to his left. One of the 72 engravings from chalk portraits by Dance of his friends which were published between 1808 and 1814.
Actress, singer and dancer (1797?-1867), a great beauty whose amours were the subject of a number of pamphlets. "Thursday 2 o'clock", 3 pp, 12mo. She sent him a dinner invitation that morning but he had gone. "Thank Ferdinand for his Book which I return - and for the apple - which I shall cut up with some curiosity". In a postscript she thanks him for "I cannot sing". Signed "M H", so dating from after her marriage to Harrington in 1831. In good overall condition, despite negligible water staining, tears and traces of mount.
Srimathi Mirabai, Indian Classical Dancer - "India's Pavlova". One page each, large 4to, good condition, the second has a representation of an Indian dancer cut from corner (present in first), with some additions in Mirabai's hand. (6 Dec.) She gives information about her activities, the tour, her studies, her performances in India and Ceylon, enclosing a photo (not present). (21 Dec.) She gives some idea of the thinking behind the tour, testing whether Indian Classical Dancing would be successful in London and Europe. Her partner has returned to India but she has her eye on another.
